Self-help tips: Diabetes

According to the Canadian Diabetes Association, more than two million Canadians have diabetes. If left untreated or improperly managed, diabetes can result in complications including heart, kidney and eye disease, and nerve damage.
Diabetes warning signs and symptoms
- Unusual thirst
- Frequent urination
- Weight change (gain or loss)
- Extreme fatigue or lack of energy
- Blurred vision
- Frequent or recurring infections
- Cuts and bruises that are slow to heal
- Tingling or numbness in the hands or feet
- Trouble getting or maintaining an erection
Please note: many people who have type 2 diabetes may display no symptoms.
Managing your diabetes
Diabetes symptoms and complications are not set in stone. Through proper diabetes management, people can live a full, healthy life. Some important tips:
- Quit smoking
- Exercise regularly ? in many cases, a good goal is 45 minutes, three times per week
- Check and care for your feet and skin daily
- Monitor your blood sugar levels
- Limit your alcohol intake
- Learn whether insulin or medications are right for you ? talk to your doctor
Nutrition tips
- Eat a consistent amount of food each day
- Control your portion sizes.
- Do not skip meals or snacks.
- Choose foods that are low in fat and high in fibre
- Do not add additional salt to your foods at the table.
- Avoid foods that are high in fat or salt
- Avoid concentrated sweets, such as cake, pies, chocolate or candies
- When thirsty, choose water instead of juice.
