Message from the Chair and the President & CEO
2007-08

Responding to a new community need in the 1930s, the Sisterhood of St. John the Divine founded the Toronto area's first rehabilitation hospital. Seventy years later, innovation continues as we tackle the health care challenges of the 21st century.

People now survive previously fatal conditions such as cancer, strokes, diabetes and traumatic injuries. Medical advances have uncovered a new need: renewed quality of life, productivity and reduced dependence on increasingly limited health care resources.

St. John's Rehab Hospital is once again responding to the need. Thinking globally, we're helping more people everywhere regain their health and return to their work, their families and their communities.

This year, we teamed with North York General Hospital to increase people's access to rehab after debilitating medical conditions. We also partnered with Women's College Hospital to help people recover from advanced, painful wounds. Our expanding information management partnership with 12 other Toronto-area health care organizations is developing technology to benefit every patient. New perspectives drive our research into innovative techniques for people recovering from amputations, SARS, organ transplants, strokes, burns and orthopaedic conditions.

Over the past three years, the Board of Directors has also led the way in an evolving, regionalized health system that rightfully demands increased transparency, value and accountability. Continuous education, team building, skills-based recruitment and a refreshed, strategic governance structure have set the tone for an academic, proactive organization that is at the forefront of specialized rehabilitation care. The members of the Board look forward to continuing that momentum and we commend their unwavering dedication to the pursuit of excellence.

It takes an outstanding, forward-thinking team of staff, Sisters, physicians and volunteers to help patients achieve tremendous, almost unimaginable, gains. Together, we'll continue to innovate to meet the new needs of our health care system and, most importantly, the patients who need our vital level of health care.
