2009-10 Annual Report
Message from the Chair and the President & CEO
June 2010

After surviving serious injuries and illnesses, our patients take the next steps in their lives. They work hard and they persevere. They concentrate on achieving their goals.

The team at St. John’s Rehab Hospital takes a cue from these remarkable men and women. We have now embarked on our own Next Steps – a five-year strategy that is moving us to the forefront of specialized rehabilitation care. This strategy is already driving us to make an important and positive impact on patients and the healthcare system.

In 2009, we were one of Ontario’s first rehab hospitals to introduce a full range of services on the weekends. Our team now works every day of the week to admit patients, provide therapy and return our patients home. Instead of waiting in their acute care hospital, people can get started on their recovery sooner. The impact: this year, we treated 200 additional patients – helping even more people get back to their homes, jobs and families.

To improve care today and tomorrow, we have renewed our focus on researching patient care techniques and teaching future rehabilitation professionals. We are applying our specialized knowledge to areas where there’s a shortage of published research, including recovery techniques for burns and electrical injuries. Through research inquiry, student placement supervision and classroom teaching, our clinicians will continue to improve patient outcomes throughout Canada and around the world.

We’re also achieving our goals to continuously improve our care and create a safe environment for patients. We are very proud that Accreditation Canada has acknowledged our efforts by awarding St. John’s Rehab Hospital with another three-year accreditation.

Ontario’s population is aging and growing. Medical science allows people to live with more conditions than ever before. A new goal has emerged – ensuring that rehabilitation is there to improve people’s health and reduce their dependence on other levels of the healthcare system. With construction beginning on our state-of-the-art outpatient wing, and with a new strategic plan, St. John’s Rehab Hospital will be there to meet these challenges and to return people to a high quality of life.

Whether it’s learning to walk again, participating in sports, returning to work or recapturing independence, our patients know that it’s no small victory to regain the simple things in life. As we look to the future, the Board of Directors anticipates many big victories ahead for St. John’s Rehab Hospital and the inspiring people that we serve.
