Board Governance

2010-11 Annual Report
Message from the Chair and the President & CEO
June 2011

With every step a person takes after losing his leg, every word a stroke survivor writes again, and every lap an organ transplant recipient walks around her patient care unit – achieving every incredible goal is a personal victory. Thanks to customized rehabilitation care tailored to each patient's individual needs, people come to life at St. John's Rehab Hospital.

It's also personal for our expert rehabilitation teams. They have dedicated their careers to helping patients to overcome the obstacles on their incredible journeys back to life. And, each year, these dedicated professionals reach new milestones and advances in patient care, rehab research, education and workplace culture, so that we can care for even more patients today and tomorrow.

As the healthcare system faces fiscal and capacity-related difficulties, St. John's Rehab Hospital emulates our patients by meeting these challenges head-on, and with much hope for the future. This year, we continued to put Next Steps – our five-year strategic plan – into action, building innovative, cost-effective programs that improve capacity at our acute care partners and increase our ability to rebuild even more patients' lives.

We continue to offer a full range of services on the weekends so that patients can get the care they need, when and where they need it, helping them return to their jobs, hobbies and families sooner than ever before. Addressing a clear need in the community, we enhanced our stroke and neurological program, using our existing resources to help even more people thrive. Through preventative education and programs, such as our community falls prevention program, we are giving people the tools to stay independent, prevent injury and maintain optimal health. And, if people do require surgeries, we now offer an exercise program to help them prepare so that they can recover sooner.

We have taken major steps forward in advancing rehab discovery and learning. With an improved plan for research infrastructure, our team can apply their specialized knowledge to develop techniques that will enhance patient outcomes. And, with robust learning activities, we have equipped our nurses, therapists, support staff and leaders with the education they need to give our patients the best rehab care at an exceptional organization.

Soon, we will have an even better facility where we can provide care for our patients. Now nearing its completion, the John C. and Sally Horsfall Eaton Centre for Ambulatory Care will help us meet the complex needs of our patients and transition people back to living productive lives at work and in the community.

As we anticipate the appointment of a new Board Chair, the Board of Directors can reflect on the last three-year term with pride. Following the example of our patients, we have worked hard and made great progress towards our goals. The hospital's new strategic plan is coming to life as we continue to reach our vision to be at the forefront of specialized rehab care.

2011/2012 will be a year of new milestones as we open our new wing and celebrate our 75th anniversary. As we take the next steps, we'll continue our tradition of innovation, transforming the way rehabilitation can rebuild people's lives in our communities, throughout Ontario and around the world.
