Occupational Therapy Volunteer

My volunteering experience at St. John’s Rehab Hospital can be described as nothing but priceless. Once a week for three hours, I worked with Occupational Therapists and observed clinical activities. I learned about procedures and occupational therapy available to people with various burn or trauma issues.

In August, my role changed. I was recruited as a research assistant for the Nintendo Wii research project. Not only did I conduct research on innovative rehab techniques, but I also organized and implemented 63 trials spanning six full days. The work done at St. John’s Rehab Hospital and my ability to participate in various tasks helped me to decide to do my masters in Occupational Therapy.

Volunteering requires a level of maturity and openness to learning new things. My advice to anyone wanting to volunteer would be to give 100 per cent effort in all that you do, because it prepares you for your career, and those valuable skills also transfer to your life activities.
