Home visits help seniors stay independent

New program combines education and exercise to stop falls before they happen

You know your home: the location of the furniture, the placement of the rug, the feeling of the tile as you steady yourself when you get into the bathtub. But, is your home and lifestyle protecting you from the risk of falling?

Funded by the Central Local Health Integration Network (LHIN), our new Community Falls Prevention Program helps seniors reduce their risk of falls, prevent trips to the emergency department, and improve their confidence to live independently.

Now, he runs.

Happy to work through the weekend

Innovative models, such as weekend rehabilitation, can benefit patients, the health care system and all of the residents of Ontario.

When someone recovers from a traumatic accident, a stroke, an amputation or a major surgery, that person naturally wants to use every available moment to work on getting better.

But every day, patients endure long waits that prevent them from receiving the care they need, when and where they need it. That's why, in 2009, St. John’s Rehab Hospital made rehab therapy and admissions available seven days a week.

She never expected that it would all fade.

Our researchers are studying approaches that help patients like Ursula make meaningful recoveries. Thanks in part to a $154,000 grant from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), Dr. Sara McEwen is investigating the benefits of the Cognitive Orientation to daily Occupational Performance (CO-OP).

Family cook gets the ingredients for recovery

Nosrat, an independent, great-grandmother loved to entertain friends and family, but a bad fall on Christmas day forced her out of the kitchen and into a hospital bed. Plagued by excruciating pain, she was in a hospital bed for several weeks unable to walk or move on her own.

Traditionally, people recovering from general surgeries or medical conditions were not candidates for rehabilitation programs. To address this gap and return people like Nosrat to life, St. John's Rehab has opened up an important new option in recovery.

Motor vehicle accident survivor encourages safe driving

Although the weather was clear and she took all necessary safety precautions, that split second forced her to spend several months in intensive rehabilitation at St. John's Rehab Hospital.
