Shoemaker to the stars gets back on his feet

Providing short-term active reconditioning after long hospital stays

In his 88 years, Paul Abate was a devoted family and business man who thrived on helping others, until an illness compromised his ability to help himself.

To recover, he came to St. John's Rehab Hospital's unique Short-Term Active Reconditioning (STAR) program: a program focused on providing rehabilitation for people who have undergone general surgery or have a medical condition resulting in a lengthy hospital stay. Learn more...

With golden determination, past patients carry the Olympic Torch

They thought they would never walk again. But, in December 2009, Mary Jane Torrie and Mike Hodgkinson participated in the Olympic Torch Relay on its route to Vancouver.

In fall 2008, Mary Jane, an elementary school principal and mother of three, was more active than ever. A marathon runner, her training came to an unexpected halt when she had a stroke. Her prognosis: She would never walk again.

In June 2002, Mike was repairing furniture when fire engulfed his second-floor apartment. To save his life, he had to jump four and a half metres to a neighbour’s driveway. The devastating accident left Mike with third-degree burns to more than 60 per cent of his body.

Questions about recovery? We're finding the answers.

Every day, our team sees the tremendous impact rehabilitation has on people’s lives. St. John’s Rehab helps more than 2,500 people each year return to a full life after complex illnesses and injuries.

Our research program will continue to develop and evaluate new treatment methods by combining innovative studies with direct patient care. During the next five years, our research will focus on rehabilitation techniques for survivors of strokes, organ transplants, cancer, traumatic injuries and orthopaedic conditions.

We're finding the answers to returning people home sooner, in better health and with improved quality of life – in Toronto, in Canada, and around the world.

Black ice takes car crash survivor's leg, but not her drive to walk

Brenda Mascoll was standing at the roadside behind her vehicle when a driver slid on black ice, colliding into her at more than 120 km/h. After losing her right leg, she thought she would never walk again.

Today, she has new hope. For the second year in a row, Brenda, 37, walked in the Achilles Canada 5K Run/Walk to raise funds for St. John's Rehab Hospital - the hospital that rebuilt her life. She is part of a team of 67 walkers and runners supporting fellow survivors that continue to beat the odds.
