Research Projects
Home to Canada’s first rehab programs
for severe burns and organ transplants,
St. John’s Rehab is setting the path for
care in these areas. In partnership with
the University of Toronto, our researchers
are exploring how easily, comfortably
and effectively patients can perform
everyday tasks, both before and after
rehabilitation. Returning to simple
activities such as cooking and household
chores can be tremendously difficult for
people recovering from these conditions.
Another newly created key partnership with York University will focus on exploring the social, psychological and biomedical aspects of rehabilitation.
Our team is probing many other innovative areas in rehabilitation care, including:
- coping with work-related injuries and returning to work
- rehabilitation outcomes for amputees
- mobility after rehabilitation for hip fracture
- medication effectiveness and safety
- transition and coordination of care following inpatient rehabilitation
- psychological impact of SARS
- prevention of venous
thromboembolism following
knee replacement and lower
extremity fractures - participating in daily activities with reduced limb function due to neurological conditions
- integrated model of care for joint replacements
- patient perspectives on inpatient rehabilitation
- aerobics and cardio-respiratory fitness after burn injuries
- wound healing and phantom pain in amputees
These important research activities will help identify how rehabilitation can help patients recover sooner and achieve better health outcomes.
Break new ground with us
Our key foci for research include:
- Complex rehabilitation programs (amputations, burns, cardiac, neurosciences and organ transplants)
- Models for partnership that foster the continuum of care
- Innovation and best practice
- Quality assurance and program evaluation
